About this project
I was commissioned by Claire Bullen at Good Beer Hunting to create three illustrations to accompany David Jesudason's article 'Empire State of Mind: Interrogating IPA's Colonial Identity'. David's important and thoughtful article considers how IPA's history and composition is inextricably bound up in its destructive colonial past, in spite of its contemporary ubiquity and accessibility.
In visualising David's insights, I wanted to focus on this tension or struggle for identity, embedding it in surreal and improbable scenarios. I depicted elements from Indian folklore and culture in opposition to and contradicting the IPA itself, represented in its bottled form.
